Thanks Emjay (MJ)

Well enough babbling from me, what i would like to do is to focus on the recently started after school programme for the East End/Gun Bay United Church.  The following involves steps that we took in starting the Programme.

EAST END/ GUN BAY UNITED CHURCH’S

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Why an After School Programme

For the most part it seems that many children within the community are let unattended and may have to take care of themselves, particularly between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., i.e. the time after they have left school and when parents arrive home. With this problem at hand, one way of addressing it would be to introduce an after school programme for residents in the community. Such a programme would require the support of the parents and teacher and may realistically have to begin on a small scale, catering to children specially recommended and who may need special assistance. The programme could focus on the students of the primary school and well as having some form of activity for those students at the high school level. The programme would the focus on providing a forum for homework and study support. Since the church believes that education is important and can be used as a tool for liberation and empowerment, then this programme would be taken seriously. This programme would require parents to be actively involved in what is happening in the life of their children.

Aim

This programme is an outreach ministry of the East End/Gun Bay United Church to the Children and young people of the community to provided them with educational opportunities. We have a caring and dedicated staff consisting of Church employees, teachers and volunteers.

The purpose of the after School Programme is to “provide a safe and enriching environment for children and young people, where they can hear and respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ, receive care and supervision at a time when parents may be unavailable, and build healthy relationship with peers and adults

Target group

Students at the Primary level could be our main focus group, however a programme for high school students would be included as well. The programme would seek to target those children and young people whom for the most part are left unattended after school.

We Offer

A snack at the start of each day’s activity.

Parents are encouraged to pay fees on time, one week in advance preferably the Friday of the week before. Payments may be made for up to one month at a time. The programme is not-profit making and is subsidized by the churches.

Where parents may have a difficulty in paying fees they may speak with the Children and Family Life Ministry Coordinator, or Youth Worker, so that an alternative arrangement can be made. Fees are paid weekly.

Useful Information

· We provide snack every evening as soon as you child arrives from school. It is helpful to us if you do not send your child with additional snacks or money, as it is unfair to the other children. Please speak to the Supervisor, or Youth Worker if you child has special dietary needs.

· Please call the office if your child is unable to attend the program for one day or more. This will assist us in knowing who will not be present and when.

If you have further questions or would like to enroll your child/children please contact Mr. Mark or Ms. Wendy at East End United Church (345) 947-7618. email eeunited@candw.ky

Well the Programme Started on February 4th 2002, and has been in operation for four months old.  So far things have been going great and has been making a significant impact on the lifes of the children involved.  There are approximately 35 children registered and we now have an average attendance of 30.  The children participated in the "Youth Rally" which was a part of the United Church's Bi-annual Convocation held April 13-14th, 2002 in the Cayman Islands.  Their performance was one that will live in the memories of all who attended.  The programme has caught the attention of many parents and individuals as well as persons in the government ministry.  We are looking for positive things to happen.  Please pray for this ministry and our other children and youth programmes.
